Security: Critical Exchange vulnerability (CVE-2025-53786) requires immediate action

On August 5, 2025, the U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA warned of a critical vulnerability (CVE-2025-53786) in hybrid Exchange server environments that allows attackers to escalate privileges from on-premises servers to Exchange Online. This vulnerability poses a significant risk because it allows attackers to cause data leaks, perform lateral movements, or launch ransomware attacks.

Microsoft responded on August 12 with an emergency update (KB503XXXX), which is mandatory for Exchange Server 2019 (CU14 and later), Exchange Server 2016 (CU23 and later) and Exchange Online. OneNote for Windows 10 will only be available in reading mode from October 14, 2025, to focus resources on the desktop version of the app, which provides a more consistent experience for users.

EU decision: Teams will be separated from Office 365

According to an antitrust investigation by the European Commission, Microsoft will have to offer Teams without Office 365 from October 1, 2025. The Commission had accused Microsoft of violating EU antitrust rules by bundling Teams with its widely used productivity suite.

Microsoft has agreed to offer versions of its Office 365 and Microsoft 365 software packages without Teams at a reduced price, allowing customers with long-term licenses to switch to packages without Teams. These commitments are now legally binding and aim to promote competition and improve interoperability with third-party tools.

This decision has far-reaching implications for Microsoft 365’s licensing and bundling practices, allowing organizations to license only Office 365 without Teams or purchase Teams standalone.
