Outlook Lite | Microsoft shuts down Android app

Microsoft is pulling the plug: The Outlook Lite app, designed for low-resource Android devices, will be permanently discontinued on May 25, 2026. As the company confirmed via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center (Message ID MC1276508), the application will lose all access to mailboxes from this deadline, rendering it effectively useless for users.

The shutdown takes place in two phases: Since October 6, 2025, the app has no longer been listed in the Google Play Store to prevent new installations. Existing customers have been able to continue using the slim alternative since then. This transition period ends in six weeks. Although the app can still be opened on the smartphone after May 25, navigation will be blocked and the retrieval and sending of emails will be prevented.

Microsoft justifies this step with a consolidation of the portfolio. The aim is to bundle development capacities and avoid redundancies in order to focus entirely on the primary Outlook Mobile app. While Outlook Lite was specifically optimized for devices with less than 1 GB RAM and slow 2G/3G networks, it lacks modern features such as Copilot integration or advanced compliance tools like Data Loss Prevention (DLP).

For you as a user or administrator, this means: A switch to the standard app is inevitable. An „Upgrade“ button is already integrated within Outlook Lite, which leads directly to the Play Store. Since the data resides in the Microsoft 365 Cloud, emails, calendars, and contacts remain fully preserved and are immediately available again after logging into Outlook Mobile.

The decision is consistent from a technical perspective, but poses hurdles for users of extremely old hardware. The standard app requires significantly more system memory and processing power. Nevertheless, the switch is without alternative for security reasons, as only the main app is continuously supplied with patches and modern security policies. Administrators should now prioritize the rollout of Outlook Mobile to prevent a "hard" failure of mail access at the end of May.
