Microsoft is ushering in the next era of AI-powered productivity. The company has started the rollout of OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 into Microsoft 365 Copilot , while introducing three revolutionary operating modes: Instant, Thinking , and Auto Analysis. The update, which began on December 11 , promises not only higher speed, but above all a massive leap in the quality and flexibility of AI results.
Rollout and the new models
Users with an active Copilot license can use the new features gradually. A model drop-down menu in the Copilot interface allows you to switch between the two main models:
- GPT-5.2 Instant: This model is optimized for lightning-fast reactions. It’s the ideal choice for everyday routine tasks such as composing short emails, quick translations, or summarizing straightforward documents. The focus here is on efficiency.
- GPT-5.2 Thinking: Here, the focus is on depth and strategy. This model takes more time to process and excels at sophisticated, multi-level problem solving, complex strategic analysis, and logical thinking. It is the tool of choice for evaluating large data sets or creating in-depth reports.
The Copilot Studio will also be automatically migrated to the more powerful GPT-5.2, allowing custom copilots to immediately benefit from the improved intelligence.
Revolution of “Car Analysis”

The biggest practical innovation is the auto mode. If the user selects this option, Copilot decides independently and context-sensitively which of the two variants –
Massive increase in quality in everyday work
The switch to GPT-5.2 is more than just a version jump. Internal benchmarks show impressive improvements that have a direct impact on daily work:
- Error reduction: The error rate could be reduced by up to 30 percent compared to the predecessor model GPT-5.1.
- Broader competence: The AI shows improved benchmark results in reasoning , code creation, spreadsheet processing , and presentation creation.
A decisive factor for this is the close connection to the Microsoft 365 Work IQ graph. GPT-5.2 can thus access the user’s individual work context – be it meetings, emails or documents – in an even more well-founded and personalized way and seamlessly weave the insights gained into their responses.
With GPT-5.2 and the new intelligent analysis modes, Microsoft is setting a new standard in productivity AI. Users can look forward to an even more flexible, precise and efficient way of working. The rollout is underway and the update will reach all Copilot users in the coming weeks.
